The "Deism" of George Washington Openly Displayed in His Prayers to Jesus Christ

It is in vogue today to say our Founding Fathers were Deists. For secularists this is nearly as titillating as it is to say that the Founding Fathers believed in the separation of Church and State, as is currently defined by secularists and liberals.

I took the opportunity, at the challenge of a commenter, to “look up” whether one of our Founding Fathers, George Washington was indeed a Diest. After all, "everyone" knows that anyone that smart had to be a Deist rather than a Christian. A cursory Google search yields quotes from our Founding Fathers which, at the very least, causes one to question the boilerplate belief that the Founding Fathers where Deists and, at most, questions what today’s secularists and liberals define as a “Deist”. Ask yourself, would a Deist say these things…

First, lets define a Deist for all those who don’t know (as defined by a Google search).

Deist:

  • One who admits the possibility of the existence of a God or gods, but claims to know nothing of either, and denies revelation. An agnostic of olden times.

  • One who believes that God exists and that He created the world, but now stands completely aloof from it.
  • With Deism now described, lets take a look at some quotes from George Washington, the first President of the United States, as examples:

“What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.” - George Washington in a speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs May 12, 1779

Comment: GW told Indian Chiefs that above all American schools would learn the religion of Jesus Christ?? Was he trying to proselytize the Indians who were naturalists or some would say Deists because of their belief in a “Great Spirit”. His quote today would seem insensitive considering his audience.

"It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible."

Comment: Considering the Bible teaches there is a personal God one can know, this sounds like he is embracing Christianity. He is certainly EXCLUDING other religions who do not believe the Bible.

"It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favors."

Comment: Now a man who believes that a God set the world into motion and left it to its own devices (Deism) would certainly not mention the above statement, would the Deists view of God provide benefits, protection and favors?

Lastly, my “exhaustive” research (Google says it took .47 seconds) yielded a 24 page handwritten manuscript book dated April 21-23,1752 of GW’s personal prayers. I have highlighted the important parts for those too lazy to do a .47 Google search….

George Washington's Personal Book of Prayers --

“O Most Glorious God, in Jesus Christ, my merciful and loving Father; I acknowledge and confess my guilt in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day.
I have called on Thee for pardon and forgiveness of my sins, but so coldly and carelessly that my prayers are become my sin, and they stand in need of pardon.”

“ I have sinned against heaven and before Thee in thought, word, and deed. I have contemned Thy majesty and holy laws. I have likewise sinned by omitting what I ought to have done and committing what I ought not. I have rebelled against the light, despising Thy mercies and judgment, and broken my vows and promise. I have neglected the better things. My iniquities are multiplied and my sins are very great. I confess them, O Lord, with shame and sorrow, detestation and loathing and desire to be vile in my own eyes as I have rendered myself vile in Thine. I humbly beseech Thee to be merciful to me in the free pardon of my sins for the sake of Thy dear Son and only Savior Jesus Christ who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me.”

"Make me to know what is acceptable in Thy sight, and therein to delight, open the eyes of my understanding, and help me thoroughly to examine myself concerning my knowledge, faith, and repentance, increase my faith, and direct me to the true object, Jesus Christ the Way, the Truth, and the Life, ..."

Seems George Washington was not just a Christian but a very pious Christian. I doubt he would fit in with modern day “intellectual” secularists who grace our coffee shops, universities and communes. Now, when was the last time you heard a Diest confess his sin to God?

Thanks to the commenter for the challenge (yawn).

    The Dearth of Impassioned Leaders

From the World Tribune - Bolton: Future of Mideast 'may well be decided' in days:

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is facing a foreign policy crisis in Lebanon where the Iran-backed Hizbullah and Syria threaten to topple the weakened democratic government in Beirut.

"The future of the Middle East, certainly the future of Lebanon may well be decided in the next several days," U.S. envoy to the United Nations John Bolton told BBC radio. "A successful re-emergence of democracy there is being directly challenged by the terrorist Hizbullah and those who support them, Syria, Iran and others."

The U.S. dilemma is whether or not to provide up to $200 million in military aid to Lebanon over the next year.

"The nightmare is that we help build a military that is taken over by Hizbullah or Syria," an official said.

On Saturday, the Siniora government approved a proposed international tribunal to prosecute suspects in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. The decision came amid warnings by Hizbullah of massive protests.

Under the administration plan, the United States would provide at least 300 Humvee combat vehicles to the Lebanese Army over the next few months. Officials said this could be followed by additional U.S. military surplus to Lebanon, including air defense systems and air platforms.
So far, the administration has focused on training Lebanese military officers and demining southern Lebanon in the wake of the Israel-Hizbullah war. Officials said Washington has helped remove about 50,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance in Lebanon, or about half of the estimated total.

"There's a major problem with unexploded ordnance on the ground and our efforts to help remove that are also proceeding very rapidly," U.S. Agency for International Development administrator Randall Tobias said on Nov. 15. "At the time I was there, the estimate was that we had removed or assisted in the removal of about 50,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance."
Officials said the administration has allocated $250 million for humanitarian and reconstruction in wake of the war, which ended on Aug. 14. They said about $100 million has been sent to Lebanon as a first step until a donor conference in Paris in January 2007.

Upon first reading I thought to myself, “Why is President Bush not ringing the fire bells announcing the need for the world to stand up and be counted in support of democracy Lebanon!?!” But then, why should President Bush and for that matter America be the only one who will stand up and publicly support a free Lebanon? Why do we not hear any support from the Democratic leadership and the world? Where is everyone?

If Al Gore was as excited about Lebanon’s freedom as he is about the ice caps melting I would vote for him as president. If the main stream media would get off of reporting salacious details about President Bush and how we are “loosing” in Iraq to positive stories of the amazing things that are happening in Iraq I would sing their praises. Why is it that no one is championing the need for democracy and the stabilization of Lebanon?

It seems like the majority of Americans and most global leaders would rather ignore the perilous situation we are in and rather focus on personal popularity, ignorance and the “pursuit of happiness” rather than face the cold hard facts of reality.

World leaders now have the chance to stand up and be counted. To say they support the democratic leadership in Lebanon rather than the occupation of terrorist group and by proxy, Iran and Syria. Will anyone stand up and give an impassioned speech in support of freedom?

    George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Lest we forget the real meaning of Thanksgiving and America's amazing Christian heritage. Click the image below to download the PDF version of the Proclamation.
    -----
    Thanksgiving Day Proclamation
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Lawrence O’Donnell's History of Bad Predictions on the HuffPo

Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC's guru political analyst, moonlights over at the Huffington Post. The only difference between listening to Larry and reading Larry's articles is being able to re-read outrageous statements to make sure you understood what was said. Thanks to Larry boldy hammering out his predictions on the left-wing blog we are able to catalog his history of poor predictions.

While O’Donnell may think his opinion has weight, I think he has been so severely discredited that Iwonder why he shows his face in public anymore.

Now that we know that Rove was NOT the “leaker” of Valerie Plame’s name but rather Richard Armitage, it therefore becomes quite interesting to see how authoritatively O’Donnell comments on Karl Rove (all misspellings his):

07/02/05 - I revealed in yesterday's taping of the McLaughlin Group that Time magazine's emails will reveal that Karl Rove was Matt Cooper's source. I have known this for months but didn't want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury.

    O’Donnell boastfully continues...

On Friday, I broke the story that the e-mails that Time turned over to the prosecutor that day reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper is protecting.

Rove would not let me get one day of traction on this story if he could stop me. If what I have reported is not true, if Karl Rove is not Matt Cooper’s source, Rove could prove that instantly by telling us what he told the grand jury. Nothing prevents him from doing that, except a good lawyer who is trying to keep him out of jail.

7/04/05 - Karl Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, had his holiday weekend ruined on Friday when I broke the story that the e-mails that Time delivered to the special prosecutor that afternoon reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper has been protecting for two years.
Not coincidentally, the word 'knowing' is the most important word in the controlling statute ( U.S. Code: Title 50: Section 421). To violate the law, Rove had to tell Cooper about a covert agent "knowing that the information disclosed so identifies such covert agent and that the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent's intelligence relationship to the United States."

7/22/05 - Everything Rove-Luskin has leaked has been printed in a form most favorable to the Rove defense without a word of leaked input from the prosecutor. When the prosecutor tells his story, don't expect him to accept Rove's currently uncontested claim that he does not recall who told him that Wilson's wife was a CIA agent and don't expect the "old news" spin to work. When the prosecutor has his day, he is going to make new news.

10/6/05 - If Karl Rove's lawyer, Bob Luskin, is still as easy to read as he has been since I broke the story that his client was Matt Cooper's source, then we now know that Rove has received a target letter from Patrick Fitzgerald. How do we know it? Luskin refuses to deny it.

Prediction: at least three high level Bush Administration personnel indicted and possibly one or more very high level unindicted co-conspirators.

As usual, Luskin has said nothing that is inconsitent with Rove being indicted. But it usually takes the MSM a news cycle or two to figure that out.

    Source: Huffington Post

He never posted so many times on The Huffington Post as he did when he thought he was “hot on the trail” of the conniving Karl Rove.

Seeing the Rove thing fall apart, O'Donnell decided to go after Joe Liberman HuffPo:

Joe Lieberman Will Drop Out 08/10/06 - Joe Lieberman will drop out. He probably knows right now that the day will come in late September when he will announce his withdrawal from the race. No one is going to have to talk him into it. By that time, the Democratic Party power structure will be doing its thing for Ned Lamont and Lieberman will be trailing by double digits.

According to Real Clear Politics which tracks Senate races, Lieberman is ahead in EVERY poll that has been conducted. the Quinnipiac poll has Joe Lieberman ahead by 12%. The average of all four polls has Joe Liberman ahead by 7.3%.

O'Donnell has no clue what he is talking about. His innane postings on HuffPo proves how out of touch he is with reality and how off balance his predictions are. Then again, maybe Lawrence O'Donnell is nothing more than Rove's sock puppet.
